Jared Leto (above) transformed himself...
...to play Lennon slayer Mark David Chapman.
What was the most unexpected side effect of playing Mark David Chapman, the deranged killer of former Beatle John Lennon, in a new film? The answer, according to actor Jared Leto, was the gout.
"I don't know if it was gout - but I had a definite problem with my feet," says Leto, who gained 60 pounds to play the role in "Chapter 27," which opens Friday. "Toward the end of the shoot, one of the glaring issues was the pain I had with my feet. I couldn't walk for long distances; I had a wheelchair because it was so painful. My body was in shock from the amount of weight I gained."
His face bloated and puffed with the extra poundage, Leto creates a haunting, sometimes distasteful vision of Chapman, in a film that looks at the last couple of days Chapman spent in New York before he murdered Lennon on Dec. 8, 1980, outside the Dakota apartment building at 72nd and Central Park West, where Lennon lived.
Gaining the weight, Leto says, was tougher than dieting himself into skeletal shape for his role as drug addict Harry Goldfarb in 2000's "Requiem for a Dream."
"I gorged and force-fed myself," Leto, 36, says by telephone from Los Angeles, where he's readying for a trip to South Africa with his band, 30 Seconds to Mars.
"It was important to make that transformation because I thought his physical representation of himself was an indication of who he was. And it changed everything about who I was - the way I walked, the way I talked, the way I felt about myself, the way people treated me."
"I don't sympathize with anyone who does something like this," he says. "He's exactly where he should be: in prison for life. But he's a human being, as disturbed and deranged as he is. The point of the film was to examine and explore the mind of a sick human being. It's wonderful to explore the lives of people who reach their greatest potential - but I also think it's worthwhile to explore the failures who have experiences that are painful and difficult. This is a historical event."
Leto was 9 when Lennon was killed: "I remember my mother crying," he says, "and having a sense of something sad happening."
The role is the latest by the former fixture on People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" list in which he plays against his boyish good looks.
